a cappella SATB – words by Manie Payne Ferguson, music by William J. Kirkpatrick – arr. Peter Amidon
Free download. In Amidons’ book’Fifty-five Anthems for the Small Church Choir‘. The Amidons learned this and many more wonderful old American hymns (including “Angels Hovering Round“) from Lucy Simpson. Lucy had gleaned most of these from her collection of 19th century American hymnals. Hallowell, the hospice choir Peter co-directs, often uses this in their vigil hospice sings.
Manie Payne Ferguson words,
Joys are flowing like a river
Since the comforter has come;
He abides with us forever,
Makes the trusting heart his home.
Blessed quietness, holy quietness,
What assurance in my soul.
On the stormy sea, speaking peace to me,
How the billows cease to roll.
Like the falling rain from heaven,
Like the sunlight from the sky,
So the Holy Ghost is given,
Falling on us from on high.
What a wonderful salvation,
Where we always see his face;
What a peaceful habitation,
What a quiet resting place.
